Supplies for Artists

    Drawings

    • Several types of pencils can create drawings. Regular graphite pencils are available alone or in sets with several colors. Some of the color pencils provide looks similar to watercolor paints. Pens and markers may also produce added effects in drawings. Any pens containing ink are waterproof as well as fade resistant. Brushes are another way to spread the ink into unique designs. For the drawings themselves, try to use sketchbooks or trace paper specifically labeled for drawings.

    Paintings

    • A canvas is the traditional space in which a painter works. They come in many sizes and can come in rolls or pre-stretched on a frame. Certain pads also contain canvas paper for artists. Paints come in acrylic, oil or watercolors. Oil paints may come in oil bars while acrylics may be available in bottles. A majority of paints also have tubes for packaging. Brushes range from traditional shapes to angles. Those seeking a selection of brushes can purchase sets in various configurations. Easels are another tool for painters that helps keep the canvas stable during the painting process.

    Photography

    • Cameras are necessary for anyone seeking to work in photography. A camera body is the first piece to purchase. The next consideration is a selection of lenses which range in size and necessary effect. Some examples of effects available include fish eye. If choosing a digital camera, the media card will be an essential tool. These cards offer different amounts of storage based on the price. Size is also a consideration when thinking about the amount of photos for the project. Lighting equipment may help professional projects but camera bags are necessary to keep the camera, lenses and other items safe. Tripods keep the camera stable by removing any shaking that may occur when held by the photographer.

    Sculptures

    • Many materials are available to produce sculptures including clay, wood, marble, plaster and metals such as iron or steel. Some artists use recycled materials like wire, glass or cans. To achieve the result, a sculptor will need a few tools to shape their creation. The choice of tools will depend on the material. For example, a chisel hammer and hand brush are necessary for hard surfaces. Wire requires pliers or welding equipment as well as glue to create the piece.
