- 1). Examine the rifle and determine how the sights are mounted. A gunsmith is needed If the sight or sight base is integral to the receiver or barrel, Other sights are mounted by flathead, Phillips or hex-head screws. Some are secured by pins, or held in by the tension of a dovetail.
- 2). Secure the rifle firmly in a padded vice or other clamp. Any movement during removal of the sight can cause damage to the rifle.
- 3). Remove the screws that hold the sight in place. The screwdriver must fit properly to prevent slippage and damage to the screw or rifle. Wrap hammers and drift punches to prevent damage to the rifle or its finish.
- 4). Insert the screws back into the receiver or barrel, or use another non-permanent plug. A gunsmith can permanently plug the holes and re-finish the rifle.
