- A double room is suitable for accommodations for one or two people. When two people are staying in a double room, it is often a couple who intend to share a single bed.
- Double rooms are offered with a single larger bed or two smaller, twin or double sized beds. In some establishments, a double room may come equipped with two queen-sized beds, although these are usually upon request and may require an additional fee.
- Double rooms are of moderate size, usually running the size of an average household bedroom. The sizes vary depending on the establishment, but they are not usually large or expansive like a suite would be.
- Single rooms are offered for just one person. Twin rooms are like double rooms, but are specifically intended to have two beds, usually smaller than the double room beds. You also can have rooms that accommodate three or more people. These can have larger beds, two or three smaller beds, or roll-away beds for additional occupants.
- Most of the time when people refer to a double room, they are speaking in terms of a hotel, inn or guest house setting. You can refer to this kind of room in the residential setting, but it is usually not a term used for that purpose.
