How to Get From Rome to Naples by Train

    Trip Planning

    • 1). Visit Trenitalia's English website. You can view information about the services they provide and learn about how to use the system.

    • 2). Plan how you will get to Rome Termini Station, the primary train station in Rome. Rome Termini Station is connected to the local Metro Lines A and B as well as local bus routes.

    • 3). Plan where you will get off the train in Naples, which has two stations. The Naples Campi Flegrei Station is located near the San Paolo Stadium and is connected to the local Metro Line 2, while the Naples Central Station is central to the city but no connection to the Metro.

    • 4). Decide what kind of train to take. Train speed and frequency of stops vary, so you will have several options with different travel times. The Trenitalia website will tell you what kind of train operates for each scheduled trip.

    • 5). Decide whether you want to buy your ticket in advance on the internet or in person at the Rome Termini Station.

    Purchasing a Ticket Online

    • 1). Register with the Trenitalia website --- there will be a link on the website's front page. This is a mandatory step to purchasing a ticket.

    • 2). Confirm your registration by checking your e-mail. Trenitalia will provide a link with your username and assigned password.

    • 3). Fill in your trip information on the Trenitalia page in the ticket reservation section. Click "Send."

    • 4). Select the train you want to take. Compare departure and arrival times, length of journey and train category when making your decision.

    • 5). Select your fare and seat preferences. Discounted rates may be available.

    • 6). Fill out the requested passenger information.

    • 7). Pay for your ticket using a credit card. Be advised that the Trenitalia website has a reputation for rejecting American credit cards, so call your credit card company ahead of time to clear the transaction. If your card is rejected anyway, try using a CitiBank credit card --- these have a better reputation for working.

    • 8). Choose to receive a ticket or receipt in your e-mail. Once it arrives, print it out and keep it --- you will need this on the train.

    At the Station

    • 1). Go to the Rome Termini Station.

    • 2). Purchase a ticket if you decided to buy one at the station. You can buy tickets from ticket agents or from automated machines that provide English translations.

    • 3). Find your train. Displays in the station will direct you to the correct track. Allow plenty of time to find your train as Rome Termini Station is very large.

    • 4). Validate your ticket if you purchased it at the station. Look for a yellow or red machine near your train marked "Convalida." If you purchased your ticket online, you do not need to validate it.

    • 5). Board your train and find a seat. At some point, a conductor will come around to check your ticket, though you may already be on your way when this happens.
