- 1). Avoid using hair care products that include too many harmful and harsh chemicals. They can damage your hair. Instead, look for products that contain silicone, which minimizes frizz and curl by preventing humidity from penetrating the hair shaft. Look for shampoos, conditioners and straighteners that contain silicone.
- 2). Condition your hair daily to keep it sleek and smooth. Even if the conditioner you use doesn't contain silicone, conditioners add moisture to hair, making the hair softer and shinier. Adding moisture to the hair will then make your hair sleeker and prevent it from frizzing.
- 3). Comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb. Don't pull too hard or force the comb through the hair; otherwise you may end up pulling hair out by the root. A wide-tooth comb allows you to comb your hair straight and is easier to navigate through long hair, especially hair that is naturally thick or voluminous.
- 4). Blow-dry your hair after each washing. Wrap your hair in a bath towel and gently squeeze out as much water as you can from the hair. Comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb to detangle the hair. Blow-dry your hair in sections starting at the roots and angling the blow-dryer downward to the ends of your hair.
- 5). Use flat irons sparingly. While a flat iron does keep hair looking straight and smooth, the heat from a flat iron damages your hair little by little, making it dry and brittle. Use a flat iron only every few days, if you need to, and concentrate the iron only on parts of your hair that look the most frizzy, such as the ends. Avoid ironing parts of the hair that already look straight.
- 6). Avoid volumizing hair care products. If you want to keep your hair looking sleek and thin, volumizing shampoos, conditioners and other products will work against you. Volumizing products work to expand each hair strand to make the hair look larger and thicker. Using such products may result in your hair "puffing out" and appearing larger than you'd like it to.
