• For those living outside the United States who would like to visit the country on business, pleasure or for medical treatments, a visitor visa or a non-immigrant visa can be obtained from the U.S. Department of State. The process for obtaining a travel or visitor visa includes showing proof of residence outside the U.S., filling out the appropriate non-immigrant application and pay the necessary fees to process the visitor visa.
  
  

Qualification

• Many qualifications must be met before a visitor visa is issued. Every applicant is considered an intending immigrant, so proof of the purpose of the trip must be submitted. Generally, reasons for visiting include business, pleasure or medical purposes. The applicant must also supply the specifics dates and amount of time that they expect to stay during their visit to the U.S. The applicant must be able to show that they have sufficient funds for the duration of the stay and what social and economic ties they have abroad. Applicants also must show proof or residence outside of the U.S. and that they intend to return to their home country.
  
  

Application

• Generally, those applying for a visitor visa must consult with the U.S. Embassy or consulate that has jurisdiction over their place of residence. The application should be completed ahead of the departure date in order to ensure that it can be processed in enough time. Applicants between the ages of 14 and 79 years old may be required to submit to an interview and a digital fingerprint scan.
  
  

Documentation

• Applicants must supply the Non-immigrant Visa Application, a valid passport and a 2x2 photograph. Male applicants between the ages of 16 and 45 years old also must submit a Supplemental Non-immigrant Visa Application (For DS-157).
  
  

Fees

• The non-immigrant visa application requires a nonrefundable processing fee of $131. Additional fees associated with the non-immigrant visa application can include a fee for a border crossing card, as well as a fraud prevention and detection fees.
