Updated March 07, 2014.
Event: International Walk to School Day
Date: First Wednesday in October (except for 2013, it's October 9)
Location: Your neighborhood and school
Organizer: National Center for Safe Routes to School (part of the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center)
What to do: Walk or bike to school! Your observance can be as simple as making a point to walk to school with your kids on this day, or as big as a schoolwide event with awards, a welcome breakfast, and a guest speaker.
Here's a how-to on planning a Walk to School Day event. You can also observe Walk to School Month instead. These events can also serve as a fun kick-off to a new walking school bus program.
If the streets in your neighborhood aren't safe for pedestrians, visit Safe Routes to School for helpful information and resources.
