- Failing to follow the posted speed limits in Florida can result in a ticket for a moving violation. Along with the ticket, the driver's driving record accumulates points. As a result, the drivers may be required to attend a driver improvement class. In addition to the extra fees, the driver's auto insurance premiums may increase or the policy may be canceled.
- In Florida, driving speed limits are in place to reduce the risk of an accident. A driving speed of 30 mph is permitted on all streets, including highways, unless otherwise posted at a different speed. According to the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, highways with four or more lanes must be driven at a speed of at least 40 mph unless another speed is posted. On highways with a posted speed limit of 70 mph, the driver cannot drive slower than 50 mph. School buses must operate at the posted speed at all times. - Drivers found guilty of speeding violations are given points for each violation. The number of points issued is determined by how fast the driver was going. The state gives a three-point penalty for drivers going less than 15 mph over the speed limit and four points when traveling 15 mph over the speed limit. If the speeding results in a crash, the driver incurs six points.
Accumulating 12 points within a 12 month period results in a 30 day licence suspension. Receiving 18 points within a 18 month period is a three month suspension. Drivers receiving 24 points within 36 months will lose their license for one year.
Drivers holding a valid Florida driver license will accumulate points on their Florida drivers record even if the ticket is given in another state. - After issued, speeding tickets must be satisfied within 30 days. Tickets are satisfied by going to court, paying the ticket before the scheduled court date or attending a driver's improvement course. After completing the class, the driver is required to file the paper work in the jurisdiction where the ticket was issued. After completing the class, the driver will not receive any points on his driving record for the speeding ticket.
Attending a driving school approved by the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles will reduce the court fine. The cost of the fine varies with the county.
