- 1). If you suspect your dog is sick, you should always take him to the vet or your local pet doctor. (You should at least call to talk to your vet on the phone if you are unsure). Even if your dog suffered from something other than a stroke, the dog might still need medical attention.
- 2). See how the dog behaves and see if he is acting out of the norm. The best person to tell if a dog had a stroke (other than a vet) is a person who knows the dog well. You should look for changes in behavior. Someone who doesn't know the dog might not pick up on something that someone who knows him might see right away.
- 3). Check if the dog is very tired or lazier than usual. He might see unfocused or just plain out of things. Again, you want someone who knows the dog well to see if he is different than he naturally is.
- 4). See if the dog seems to be tilting his head just to one side in a way he doesn't normally.
- 5). Is your dog generally behaving funny? Check if the dog is acting out of character. Also notice if he has suddenly become "untrained" around the house.
- 6). Check your dog's eating patterns. Is he eating just from one side and not the other? This can indicate he had a stroke.
- 7). Is your dog bumping into things a lot or looses his balance a lot? It could be that he had a stroke and possibly even lost his sight.
