South America is a continent full of variation, from the tropical rainforests of the Amazon to the desolate glaciers of Patagonia, from the lush beaches of Bahia to the wild peaks of the Andes.

In some parts of South America, the destinations are as exploited as any ocean resort in the U.S. In other places, it is possible to escape other visitors entirely. Newlyweds will find hundreds of possible honeymoon destinations, depending on taste and budget.

    Providencia, Colombia

    • The archipelago of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina in Colombia consists of several small islands on the country's Carribbean coast. The main island of Providencia offers beaches, pirate memories, and nature attractions. Apart from sightseeing, activities include diving and water sports. Accommodation on the island is usually in cottages run by families, bringing the visitor closer to the native culture.

Chilean Lake District and Chiloe Island

    • The climate of southern Chile is similar to Washington State, but in the Chilean mountains glaciers grind into the lakes, and along the coast the culture of the indigenous inhabitants is still preserved in the villages among the fiords. The main attraction is Chiloe Island, which has historical monuments going back to the 18th century.

    Buenos Aires

    • Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is located on the Rio de la Plata. The city is the economic and cultural center of Argentina, mostly known abroad as the home of the Tango. But locals like to claim they are equally passionate about soccer. The Lonely Planet Argentina guidebook describes Buenos Aires as a European-type city, despite its location in Latin America.

The city is also within easy reach of the pampas, the grassy plains dominating the south of the country. This is home to the gauchos, cowboys with a Latin American twist, and their particular culture and lifestyle.
