How to Attach Hair Clips to Extensions

    Measuring and Cutting the Hair

    • 1). Lay out flat the entire pack of hair extensions. They usually come in one continuous weft that's about six feet long. Be sure to handle the hair carefully so as not to tangle it. This is especially important if the hair isn't high quality or is synthetic.

    • 2). Hold one hair clip to the end of the weft. Cut off a portion of hair that's only as long as the clip. If in doubt, cut it a little longer than you think you need to. Repeat this one more time with another clip. These short pieces will be used on the sides of the hair above the ears. This part of the hair should only need one clip for each side, but if you want a fuller look, cut four pieces instead of two.

    • 3). Pick up the remaining uncut weft and hold it against the back of the head about one inch above the nape of your neck. Put one end against the right side of your head and measure across the back of your head using your left thumb and index finger. Without removing your fingers from that spot, cut off that portion of the hair slightly longer than you measured.

    • 4). Repeat this process, measuring about one inch higher on the head each time, until there are no more hair extensions left.

Sewing and Attaching to the Clips

    • 1). Thread the needle with about 12 to 18 inches of thread. Tie the end in a double knot so it won't slide through the weft.

    • 2). If you're right-handed, hold the clip in your left hand with the comb side on the back and facing down. You will be sewing the extension on the front side so that when you're done, you'll be able to push the comb down into your hair and clip it closed to wear the extensions.

    • 3). Starting on the right side of the hair, insert the needle into the weft between the two thick rows of thread. Then hold the hair against the clip and put the needle through the holes using a looping stitch. While the clip may have up to nine holes all around it, only sew the hair in a straight line at the top of the hair clip.

    • 4). Repeat this process for each measured weft while lining up each clip side by side. Don't leave gaps larger than about one-half inch without clips attached.
