- 1). Make arrangements with the freight carrier at least 10 days in advance. The travel time to get your car where you need it depends on the total distance, weather, holidays and rail traffic. Most coast-to-coast moves take between 10 and 14 days.
- 2). Prepare your car for travel. If you are using the Amtrak Auto Train, you can pack your car with your suitcases and belongings. If you are using a freight train service, empty your car of all of your belonging. Take pictures of the condition of your vehicle. Make note of any scratches or dents.
- 3). Arrange for pick up of your vehicle. Many carriers will pick up your vehicle from your home. Due to the large size of the transport truck, you may need to meet the truck at a location such as a supermarket or some other large parking lot. You can also choose to drop your vehicle off at the terminal. Rail terminals are located near several major cities.
