How Does Ovarian Cancer Affect the Body?

    • Ovarian cancer develops in the tissues of the ovaries, which are glands in the female reproductive system. The cancerous cells grow on the ovary or within the egg cells themselves. Given its area of origin, it spreads around and up through the body, striking the pelvic area, lower back and intestines. Ovarian cancer is highly treatable when detected in its early stages. However, as with most cancers, if it's found late, the survival rate is low.

    • Ovarian cancer can cause intestinal issues such as bloating and swelling in the abdomen. Patients can experience an upset stomach that may bring nausea, gas, diarrhea, constipation or difficulty digesting food. A diet of vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower is suggested. Small portions of meat are recommended as is an aversion to large amounts of dairy products such as milk and cheese.

    • Ovarian cancer can drain the body's energy. It spreads and triggers a higher response from the body's immune system. The aggressive attack by the white blood cells requires more of the body's resources, which will leave the body suffering from fatigue. Ovarian cancer will begin to lower the body's efficiency in absorbing food into energy, furthering fatigue.

    • Ovarian cancer can cause pressure in the body. As the cancer spreads, it can afflict the muscles and bones in the lower body and extremities. A patient can experience pressure and pain in the stomach, legs, lower back and pelvic region.

    • Ovarian cancer is typically treated via surgery and chemotherapy. The surgery removes any tumors and growths due to the cancer. Due to the disease's focus and areas of damage, surgeons may also perform removal of areas of the bowel, intestines and spleen. Re-positioning of the liver, stomach and pancreas are also performed during surgery. Chemotherapy uses anti-cancer drugs to basically spread a poison throughout the body to stop the disease's spread. Chemo can also damage normal healthy cells causing the patient temporary hair loss, decreased immune system, anemia and vomiting.
