- Hairs are roughly circular, with a central medulla surrounded by the cortex, which is made of strands of keratin. Outside this is the cuticle, a thin colorless layer made up of overlapping dead cells that protect the inner part of each hair. Next to each hair root is a sebaceous gland that produces sebum, an oily substance that keeps hair shiny.
- If your hair is exposed to drying factors such as wind, heat, dust or chemicals, then the cuticle will dry out so that the layers tend to curl at the edges. This will make each individual hair rough so that the strands don't lie evenly and your hair appears dull and lifeless.
- Cream rinses help rehydrate the hair cuticle so that the layers lie flat and the hair appears shiny and smooth. They do not affect the health of your scalp, where the hair grows. Cream rinses used regularly will create a protective film on each hair, which will reduce the amount that it can dry out and make your hair appear healthier.
- Your scalp is part of your skin and requires a well-balanced diet, plenty of water and minimal stress to stay healthy. It will be affected by smoking, illness, drugs and hormone changes. If you have a scalp condition, a medicated shampoo or a prescription from your health care provider may improve the health of your scalp and ultimately your hair.
