- 1). Keep a log of calls, including the time you received the calls and the number they came from, if you can access that information via a caller ID device. Jot down any other information given by the calling party, such as the caller's name or the name of the supposed business.
- 2). Go to the FTC's website to report telemarketers' harassing calls or phone fraud (see Resources). Your complaint will be entered into a national database used by law enforcement agencies to investigate phone crimes.
- 3). Report telemarketers' harassing calls or fraud to your state's Attorney General's office. Go to naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php and click on your state to be directed to the website of your state's Attorney General. From there, locate the "file a complaint" or similar link and follow provided instructions for reporting phone crimes.
- 4). Call your local police department and ask to fill out a report if being harassed by an individual over the phone. Provide as many details as possible.
- 5). Contact your phone company and explain the situation, and ask that the company set up a "trap" on your line. This will allow the company to determine the phone number the calls are originating from, which is useful if you don't have caller ID or if the caller is blocking his number. This information is then turned over to law enforcement to help them address the situation.
