Children with autism often have difficulties with communication.
They can go from being somewhat verbal to having no speech at all.
This can obviously make communication difficult.
But there are ways you can help your child communicate and allow them the ability to express themselves.
One such way is using sign language.
This is a very common technique that is taught to autistic children.
That way, even though they may never speak a single word, they can use sign language to communicate their wants and needs.
Some parents incorrectly believe that children should not be taught sign language because it will interrupt the learning process of speaking verbally, but the harsh reality is that some of these children will never gain the ability to speak verbally.
Giving them some form of communication is better then them never having any communicative abilities.
Another option to assist them with communication is through the use of pictures.
You could have a binder of common things they may want or need and when the child is in need of something all they have to do is point to it.
Many children that use this technique, may also carry with them a smaller version, which is helpful while outside the home.
This method can take some time to teach them, but is well worth the effort to give your child the ability to communicate.
The last option we will cover goes back to the use of pictures.
Sometimes it can be very hard to communicate to your autistic child what they are expected to do, say in the morning getting dressed, and through the use of stories we can help them understand moderately difficult tasks.
Basically you would use a story that shows step by step exactly what happens when they get dressed, or go to bed.
Through the use of step by step stories they are able to do some things on their own, that they may not otherwise have had the ability to do.
Communicating with an autistic child who is none verbal can be difficult and at times frustrating.
Communication is a big part of daily life.
With a little bit of effort and helping them to learn the process you can give them a voice, an ability to communicate what they need or want.
Every child deserves to be able to tell their parents what they need, give your own child the ability to voice their needs.
