- 1). Save your story electronically. The U.S. Copyright Office accepts DOC, TXT and PDF formats.
- 2). Navigate to the website of the U.S. Copyright Office. Click on the "eCo Login" link on the home page. Click through the security notice.
- 3). Register for an account by clicking the appropriate link on the upper left-hand side of the web page. You will need to supply your name, email, phone number and address. You will also have to select a user ID, password and challenge question. Use your real name, not your pen name. Follow the prompts to complete your registration.
- 4). Click on the "Register a New Claim" link on the left-hand side of the screen. Click the "Start Registration" button at the top of the screen.
- 5). Follow the prompts to complete Form CO. The system will prompt you for information using several screens.
- 6). Pay the $35 fee (as of 2011) online using a credit or debit card.
- 7). Upload an electronic copy of your work into the system. If your novel was published in serial form, you will have to use surface mail to file a hard copy with the U.S. Copyright Office.
