Event: Title IX Signed
Date: June 23, 1972 (President Richard M. Nixon signed the bill on June 23; it became law on July 1, 1972)
Location: The U.S.
Organizer: The bill was sponsored by Representatives Patsy Takemoto Mink (D-Hawaii) and Edith Starrett Green (D-Oregon). The law was later renamed the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.
What to do: Title IX (usually called Title Nine) states that "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." Although it was not written specifically to address inequality in sports, it led to a 600% increase in girls participating in sports.
You can honor girls in sport by cheering for your young athlete, taking her to a college or professional women's sports event, or taking one of these 10 actions that help women's sports.
