How to Make a Functional Outdoor TV Antenna

    • 1). Get a 6- to 8-foot-long metal pole with L-shaped curve and a bracket mount. A used antenna pole will be fine. For stability, do not get a pole longer than 8 feet.

    • 2). Wind the coat hanger once around the pole, at one end, and then shape the wire to form a zigzag, with a small loop at the other end. Secure the wire using a plastic tie strap.

    • 3). Determine the length of 75-ohm cable needed. Using the tape measure, measure the length of wall from the top of the roof to the floor, add horizontal floor length to where the TV is positioned, and add the length of the antenna pole plus 6 inches. Add an additional foot or so to reach the antenna cable port on the back of the TV. For optimal reception, it is advisable to keep this distance as short as possible.

    • 4). Drill a hole into the wall to accommodate the 75-ohm cable. Attach the connector at one end to the TV. Cut the connector off the other end and thread it through the hole in the wall.

    • 5). Strip the free cable end to expose the inner wire. Strip enough plastic off to expose several inches of wire. Wind the wire around the thick zigzag wire. Secure the cable to the pole using a plastic tie strap.

    • 6). Climb the stairs and attach the metal mounting bracket to the structure's fascia. Using the drill, secure the screws. Use flat-head stainless steel screws for better weather endurance.

    • 7). Position the loop end of the antenna toward the signal tower. This will give the best possible signal.
