How to Control Heart Rate Consciously

    • 1). Make an appointment with your family doctor if you believe your heart rate is too high. Consult with him to find out if taking daily medication would be a reasonable option for controlling your heart rate. There are heart rate drugs such as beta blockers that reduce the amount of adrenaline that passes into the heart. Your heart rate should remain at around 80 to 90 beats per minute if you take it on a regular basis.

    • 2). Learn how to control your breathing. This technique can be extremely effective if your resting heart rate is above 100 beats per minute. Practice slowly breathing through the nose and exhaling out through your mouth. An appropriate amount of oxygen entering and leaving the heart will relax the mind and body, allowing the heart to work less.

    • 3). Change your diet to eliminate foods that are high in sodium. This reduces water retention in the body which can make the heart work harder to eliminate the extra fluid. With the heart working harder than normal, it can tire faster, causing a high heart rate.
