- Sinus congestion involves the blockage of one or more of the four pairs of sinuses in the skull. While there are many causes, and sinus congestion may be a sign of illness or allergy, sinus congestion has several definite symptoms. It should be noted however that not all the symptoms may be present for sinus congestion to be present, but often most of them are present at once.
- One sign of sinus congestion is pressure, pain, and sensitivity in the area just above the eyes, including the eyebrow and forehead area. This is likely the result of the upper sinuses being blocked and filled. Sensitivity to light when this pressure occurs may be present, but this is not always the case with those who suffer from sinus congestion.
- Stuffiness is another reported symptom of sinus congestion. While certainly not a medical term, stuffiness generally means that sufferers of this condition have a difficult time breathing through their nose, as if the air passage to the lungs is blocked or partially blocked. This is because quite often the passage is indeed blocked by mucus that has built up in the sinus cavities.
- Many times those who suffer from sinus congestion also report a thick green or yellow discharge. This discharge may be discovered when a sufferer tries to blow his nose into a tissue or the discharge might leak from the nose and need to be wiped away.
- Other symptoms that are related to sinus congestion, but which by themselves may mean nothing, are bad breath and an irritating, dry cough. These two symptoms are most often seen accompanying the other signs of sinus congestion and should add additional weight to any diagnosis of the condition.
