- If lower leg pain is associated with sore muscles or restless leg syndrome, aromatherapy may offer pleasant and simple relief. Adding eight to 10 drops of lavender, peppermint, chamomile or lemon grass extract to a warm bath and soaking for 10 to 15 minutes helps ease leg aches. Diluting the aforementioned extracts in carrier oil and applying the mixture directly to the affected area may also help. If you suffer from leg aches and insomnia as a result of restless leg syndrome, consider spraying a light mist of lavender scented spray on your pillow before going to bed.
- Massage therapy is an excellent method of treating lower leg pain, especially leg pain caused by sore muscles or poor circulation. Massage therapy sessions typically last 30 to 90 minutes and can be customized to fit your exact needs or preferences. During a massage therapy session, a therapist will likely employ one or several techniques aimed at restoring circulation, relieving pain or promoting relaxation. These techniques include friction massage, deep tissue, shiatsu, acupuncture or aromatherapy (to name a few). Speak with a therapist before a massage therapy session and inform her of any pain associated with your lower legs. This will help cater the session to your exact needs.
- For lower leg pain associated with overuse, repetition or inflammation, attempt to rest the leg as much as possible. When lying down, elevate the leg above the level of your body using pillows or cushions. If the leg is inflamed, apply ice packs or bags of frozen vegetables to the skin for 10 to 15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling. Be sure to wrap a paper towel or cloth around the ice to prevent freezer burn. If you experience pain whenever you move the leg, consider wrapping it in athletic tape or a cast to prevent involuntary movement.
- Pain affecting the lower legs is often a result of improper leg support or injury sustained during sports. Be sure to wear proper attire at all times when playing sports. Ensure that your shoes have adequate padding and are not too small or large.
Contact a doctor or medical professional immediately if you experience lower leg pain associated with blue, black or cold skin. Seek medical attention if pain worsens with activity or does not abate with home care or conventional medication. These may be symptoms of a chronic underlying condition, such as impaired circulation, blood clots or severe injury.
