While you are uploading music to an iPod from iTunes, the program or your computer may occasionally freeze up. A computer virus, outdated computer or a lot of subscriptions to podcasts can contribute to the problem. There are several other reasons that would cause your computer to freeze when using iTunes, so investigate each option to narrow down the problem and find a solution. - Check to make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and the updated version of Quicktime. iTunes uses Quicktime to run, so if the version of either program is outdated it may cause your computer to freeze up. iTunes will prompt you to update the software when necessary as you start the program.
- Your computer's security or antivirus software may be interfering with iTunes, making the computer freeze. Temporarily disable your antivirus software and attempt to upload your music to see if that fixes the issue.
- When iTunes loads, you may have the program set to update podcast subscriptions. If you subscribe to many podcasts, the updating process can freeze the computer. Change the settings in iTunes so that you manually update podcast subscriptions instead of the automatic update.
- Scan your computer using antivirus software to ensure that your computer is free of viruses. If your computer is infected, it may be causing the freeze when you use iTunes.
- Ensure that your computer is up to date with the necessary drivers. If your computer has Internet access, try disabling the Internet and using iTunes, to see if it is the Internet activity that is interfering with the program.
- The iTunes program may be improperly installed, which can result in freezing the computer during use. Uninstall the program and reinstall iTunes to remedy the issue. The problem may be with a particular file in your music library, in which case you can create a new library and move the files to the new library one at a time until you notice the computer freezing again. Delete the file that is problematic. Also check your iTunes to ensure that you do not have plug-ins from any party other than iTunes, since plug-ins from programmers other than iTunes may not be compatible, which would make your system unstable.
