How to Travel Economically as a Single Person to Hawaii

    • 1). Book plane tickets for the off-season well in advance of traveling. Booking the tickets ahead of time and for off-seasons will dramatically lower the cost. According to USA Today, the off-seasons for Hawaii usually are May and June and from September to December. There still are beautiful beaches, nice weather and tourist spots, but there are fewer tourists in the area and great deals are available on plane tickets and lodging.

    • 2). Stay in a hostel, the least expensive accommodation for single people. Hotel costs in Hawaii are much higher, even during the off-season. Hostels rented beds where the room is shared by several individuals rather than a room rental like a hotel. In tourist heavy Hawaii, hostels are easy to find and available on most of the islands. They are even close to the beach, such as Waikiki Beachside Hostel, which is only a block from Waikiki Beach.

    • 3). Ride the bus. Taxis or private travel bring the cost of a Hawaiian trip up. Taking the bus can cut the cost dramatically.

    • 4). Plan inexpensive entertainment. Swim or snorkel to enjoy the Hawaiian beaches without spending too much money. Snorkeling equipment is available in shops around Hawaii and there are rental shops that will rent the gear near the beaches, especially near the main tourist spots. Go hiking and camping to cut the costs of staying in hostels. Hawaii has several camping locations, such as 'Akaka Falls State Park, Lapakaha State Historical Park or Kekaka Kai State Park.

    • 5). Avoid expensive restaurants. Eat at small, local restaurants or try eating the local food options instead. Local vendors sell lunch plates or similar items with Hawaiian foods such as kalua pig and rice on the side. Otherwise, buy food from a grocery store rather than eating out. Restaurant costs add up quickly.
