- 1). Open a text editor such as Notepad or another third-party program. Since logon scripts use either VBScript or JavaScript, input the commands you wish to carry out. Once that has been typed in, save the file to a location that you can access from a network shared folder. Save the file as "Filename.vbs" if you are using VBScript or as "Filename.jsp" if you use JavaScript.
- 2). Log in to the computer that holds your "Active directory" program and select "Start," "Administrative Tools" and "Active Directory Users and Computers." Once the Active Directory console opens up, you will see your domain name listed there. It should be something like "Domainname.com" or "Domainname.local." Right-click on the domain name and select "Properties."
- 3). Click on "Group policy" when the domain properties window pops up, and here is where you will see your "Default domain policy." Click on the "Default domain policy" to highlight it and click on "Edit." The "Group policy object editor" will open and on the left-hand side you will see two main categories, which are "Computer configuration" and "User configuration."
- 4). Click on the plus sign next to "User configuration" and then click on the plus sign next to "Windows settings" and here you will see the option that says "Scripts (Logon/Logoff)." Click on "Scripts" and in the right-hand side you will see two options, which are "Logon" and "Logoff." Double-click on "Logon" and the "Logon properties" window will open up.
- 5). Click on "Add" on the right-hand side and the "Add a script" window opens. Click on "Browse." Navigate to the network shared folder you saved your script to and click on the script to highlight it and select "Open." In the "Add a script" window, leave the "Script parameters" set to the default and click on "OK." Click on "Apply" and "OK" on the logon properties window to close it. Close the "Group policy object editor" and the domain properties box and close "Active directory."
