What to Look for in Choosing a Good Health Insurance Plan

Have you thought about what to consider when choosing a good health insurance plan?  We are faced with so many different options that we often find it difficult to know just what to look for. Keep in mind that the number one thing to remember as you begin your search for a good health insurance plan is this: never base your decision solely on what your monthly premium will cost. You first of all need to read the details of the health insurance plan you are considering.  This includes what your health insurance plan does and does not cover. Also you need to consider the in-network versus the out-of-network coverage as well as the costs of co-payment, deductibles, and coverage caps.

You first want to gain an understanding of the particular health insurance needs of your family. Ask yourself these questions: are you in need of coverage for just yourself, yourself and your spouse, yourself and just one child, or are you in need of a family health insurance plan? After making this determination see if you can assess the health needs of all those folks you intend to include in your health insurance plan.  This might be a wee bit trickier. These are a few questions you may need to ask: are you and the other folks you plan to include with your health insurance plan basically in good health? Do you know of any pre-existing conditions? Are any people you are considering covering with your health insurance plan ever in need of access to medical specialists or medical institutions?

If you know the answers to these questions you will then have a good starting point from which to decide what types of health insurance plans to try to target in your search for a good health insurance plan. Your next step will be considering your options. Are you being covered through a group insurance plan offered by your employer? If so, your health insurance options may be limited to the health insurance coverage that your company is offering. This may or may not make your decision easier. At the very minimum, you want to make sure you understand the difference between an indemnity plan and what's called a managed care plan and its variations. These are the two basic types of health insurance plans that are offered today.

The first plan we will look at called an indemnity plan, basically offers those folks participating the freedom to choose where and when they will seek medical assistance. This freedom usually comes at higher out-of-pocket costs. However for many folks this is a fair trade off. The next plan called managed care plans, places many more restrictions on the participants and requires folks to use the medical professionals and medical institutions that make up the plan's network. Folks participating in these managed care plans often need pre-approval for medical services that fall outside basic preventative care. The costs of healthcare in managed care services are usually lower than those found with indemnity plans. And for those folks and families who are 1) basically healthy, 2) don't have a preference as to the doctor they see, and 3) are all in a tighter budget, managed care plans may be the better choice. This is a very basic look at the types of health insurance plans available. Further due diligence is advised.

Once you have chosen the type of health insurance plan, do you feel comfortable in choosing the right health insurance company? Many companies today you'll  find, offer health insurance. These companies range from the well known corporate players that have been around for years, to the smaller, independent companies. As is the case when considering any major purchase, make sure you provide your due diligence in your research before arriving at a final decision. Talk to your friends, research on the Internet, and try to understand what you need to do when filing a health insurance claim.  This will provide you with the information you will find you need to assist you in choosing the correct health insurance company.

As always, seek the advice of a professional financial planner before deciding on a course of action that you do not fully understand.
