The Best Fertilizer for Potted Strawberries

    Planting

    • Plant potted strawberries in vegetable mix soil or potting mix soil with added fertilizer and organic matter. Add a time-release vegetable fertilizer, folllowing manufacturer's instructions on the amount of soil to use for your container. Thoroughly combine the time-release vegetable fertilizer with the soil in the pot.

    Chemical Composition

    • Use a complete fertilizer containing approximately equal parts nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Avoid fertilizers that are high in nitrogen, which could produce excessively large plants with small or inadequate fruit.

    Timing

    • It is only necessary to fertilize potted strawberries during planting. Time-release fertilizer will continue to enrich the soil throughout the growing season, for up to three months. Empty the pots at the end of the season, adding fresh soil and fertilizer when replanting each spring.
